Felting Workshop in Bishkek Kyrgyzstan
Felted wool has a long history in Central Asia. Traditionally, the nomadic shepherds of Kyrgyzstan made felt to cover their yurts and for making shyrdaks (quilted rugs) to add warmth & decoration to their homes. They also use felted wool to make hats, slippers and clothes for warmth during their long winters.
We work directly with Artisans in Kyrgyzstan, assisting them in marketing their crafts in the United States. We buy from women in remote villages who use traditional felting techniques and also from contemporary designers in the capitol city of Bishkek. There is a movement within the country to revive felt making and to design and create new products for the western market. Small workshops are popping up around the country allowing many women to work within their villages and from their homes.
Welcome to our new on-line store. We have been working with artisans in Central Asia for 10 years and we are finally at a point where we can offer our customers an opportunity to buy on-line. All of our items are handmade from natural wools, mostly merino and karakol. Products can vary slightly in size & color. If you have any concerns about sizes or colors, please us call before completing your purchase.
